Looking at O.M.G. Remix - Honeylicious

Note: Click on pics to enlarge!

Honey and Kitty have been sitting under my desk for a little over 6 weeks now and my chronic obsession with the FailFix dolls has resulted in their neglect. My entire line of Rainbow High dolls have fallen behind too, oh no. I'm sorry women of MGA, I'm getting to you soon I promise!

Having a random moment spare at 2am, after having a lackluster attempt at some art, I decided I needed a pick me up, and that is to FINALLY unbox a Remix; at least Honey, they deserve better than being bonked by my knees all-day 😭

Honeylicious is from the infamous MGA line of L.O.L O.M.G big sister dolls, this time themed around music. In the Remix line, there are technically 10 dolls so far, 4 are singles, a two pack (of the FIRST big brother, and big sister of the first Boy LOL) and the other 4 come with their little sisters in a hugemungus mega pack.

Honey was, at the time I purchased, $42 for a promotional discount price at Big W. They've since gone back up to their normal price of $65. YIKES! They're also $65 at Kmart and Target and a whopping $79.99 at Mr Toys; bigger yikes.

An interesting trait with this line is Honey, for example, will come with a second outfit for another doll, and that doll, who is Lone Star, will have a second outfit for Honey. Kitty will have one for Pop BB and vise versa. This makes for some profit for MGA if you feel so inclined to 'complete' the dolls' outfits.

This line is the first line of boxes with art that shows a doll as the focal image rather than digital art, and I think this helps give a more accurate depiction of who and what is contained within the box. The box is quite large, bigger than the previous singles, allowing space for this series' special features I suppose. It's heavy too and that's because there is an extra 'accessory', unique to this series so far - a huge vinyl disc displayed at the front, plus the secret it hides. I'll get to that once I get into the box itself.

Honey's box has a pixel pink-black-white camo style designs, and on the disc-side is her little sister Honey Bun. The back shows all 4 singles in the series, along with their 4 music singles as well. All are shown as dolls rather than digital art, like the front, which is again an accurate depiction of contents. After cutting loose the tape, and sliding out the inner box the front shows a blue scale design with punk music theme print and lyrics for the songs, and the back is plain black.

This insert section flips open on the front like a book to show a pink dashed background, torn away on the diagonal to the same print as the front of the box. A massive instruction manual will fall out of it too but don't be overwhelmed, it's the same instructions in 12 different languages.

[deck & record pics][4]

In the foreground is a full-body print of Honey, and a smaller picture of Lone Star, featuring her in Honey's single "Fashion Remix". Her quote is "My mix is so fly, I gotta put it in airplane mode." - I love this! The bulk side of the box has a DJ deck print with a pop-syle pink-black-blue yellow headphones background design. At this point, you can place the vinyl onto the turnstile mechanism, but it will not make any sounds yet. Two little dial doors slide open to reveal a shoebox and hatbox, containing Honey's smaller accessories that are wrapped in printed paper.

In her shoebox, are her shoes of course, and in her hatbox are earrings, a necklace, a watch bracelet, sunglasses, DJ laptop, and some interesting sheer, hot-pink sleeves.

The tray holding Honey slides out from the right-hand side of the box, and will also expose the music box that operates the turnstile sounds. Pull the white tab out, slide Honey's tray back in - you will need the tray to support the weight of the vinyl - put the vinyl on, and spin! Because I can't show sound in an image, you'll have to take my word for it, working and playing music. It doesn't need a huge spin, a 360 rotation will work in both directions, but if you keep spinning it will turn off. You can also slide the battery tab back in if you want, and if needed, you can unscrew the music box and remove the batteries altogether.

Onto the lovely lady herself, she's fixed into her little tray on a plastic insert, in her undies with her stand, brush, clothes bags, and her lyric book. She is one of the darker skin tones of OMG dolls, very AA-like, very curvy with a round, flat-faced head. Every L.O.L. O.M.G. doll has 9 points of articulation; 360-degree neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hips - knees are snap and lock. Her backstage room scene is very 90's-00's pop-star themed.

[in packaging pics][7]

I feared her hair would be messy like what I've seen, and unfortunately, mine suffers this common issue. It saddens me because it's micro-braiding, so I can't fix it. Something I think I can fix is the rando lose, short micro-braid strand just stickin' out the side of her pigtail. I'll either cut it down to the root or rebraid her hair in hopes of finding what went wrong. Anyhoo, her hair is thickly rooted dark brown almost black, with streaks of pink. The pink looks to have a gradient to it so it makes the colouring look inconsistent and weird. The box art shows her to have one brown to one pink ratio, but stock pictures show no brown, and neither does the doll. The weight of her hair gives her hair a permanent looking-up position. In comparison, for a brand that typically doesn't create fashion dolls, Moose is winning the micro braiding quality with DanceStylz.

[hair issues pics][8]

She's got brown eyebrows, huge green eyes with big wings and lashes, and blue eyeshadow. She's also got some freckles on her nose bridge, pink lips, and blushing. Her eye makeup looked pretty clean until I noticed the scuffs in her left eye wing. Makeup mishaps and flaws are so very common with any LOL  I can probably fix it with a little black paint and sealant. Honey's nails are painted hot pink too.

Honey is wearing an army-green camo bralette fixed at the back with velcro and pink high waisted briefs that stretch to be removed. Underneath is the signature minimalist painted on underwear, in pale metallic pink. The bralette's straps are sewn on crooked, misaligned with the markers, so it sits wonky on her chest. I'll need to unpick and resew them so it sits correctly. The high waisted briefs have the same camo style print as the bralette, but they're pink with a white waistband with black LOL OMG text all the way around. Her hips are QUITE loose, or perhaps it is the weight of the hair, and she won't stay straight so she'll likely always need a stand. Speaking of which, it's hot pink, matching her hair accents, lips and nails.

[bralette issues][10]

The first garment bag - the green with neon blue, yellow, pink, and black headphones - contains Honey's jacket. It's mostly denim, with patches of gold printed graffiti with some words from the lyrics of their songs. The hood is a completely different grey fleece fabric. It's also got real zipper teeth, but no zipper so it's not functional, and accented with little gold stud buttons.

[jacket][11]

The second garment bag - the black with pink and silver 'live music' lettering - contains a 2-tone denim bralette and skirt with gold threading. This is Lone Star's second outfit! I'll look at this better if/when I inevitably get Lone Star so she and Honey can swap.

[lonestar's outfit][12]

The third garment bag - the longest navy blue with wiggly squiggly 80s-90-s retro style boombox print - contains Honey's silky flared bottom cargo pants. They're the same colour and print as her bralette and use the same ribbon-straps for the belt cords. It's got two pockets at the top and two around her knees. A gold chain link connects the top right pocket to the bottom right pocket. They're also accented with the same gold button studs as the jacket, and gold buckle as the bralette.

[pants][13]

Upon putting the pants on, and taking them off again, I discovered the soft side of the velcro is coming away from the sewing and will need repairing or it could come off completely. Also, it seems like the bottom right side pocket has been sewn on a little too much of the pants, and some of it will need to be unpicked so the pants sit flat. There's a pulled thread in the fabric that leaves a dotted line all the way down to the back of the knee, the waistband is coming away from the right pocket, and the lower pocket on the left leg hasn't been hemmed properly and is fraying. With all these issues, I think I'm going to leave them off the doll until they're fixed or replaced.

[velcro coming away, over-sewn pocket, pulled threads, fraying][14]

After putting on all Honey's bits and pieces, I think everything matches great except the shoes. They nailed the style but the colour is so wrong. They look like they should belong to Chillax, and I'll likely buy a second pair from AliExpress or wherever I can find them, to paint to match. As for those strange sheer hot pink sleeves, it seems they're meant to be worn when the jacket is not. The design on the sunnies looks awesome, but they don't sit on her ears correctly and the arms need to be poked through her hair to keep the right height.

[shoes, sleeves worn, sunnies issues][15]

Honeylicious' whole look screams Beyonce, but more generically Destiny's Child. That gives me some ultra 2000's childhood flashbacks and is why I think I like her so much and can see past, or find a way to fix her flaws. Some of my dolls I prefer to give an alternate name to their stage name or handle (like the FailFix dolls for example, whom I'm still yet to name), and based on the connections I found in her style to the music industry, I think Destiny suits Honeylicious perfectly. It may be her Destiny to become a custom, based on the issues I've had with her hair, clothes, and otherwise.

Honey's single may be "DA MAX", but her quality is Da Minimum

MGA's quality control lately is awful. Some dolls that make it to the shelves can look worse than some of the bulk stock parts found on AliExpress and it's a little unsettling. This is a collectors nightmare because if a perfectionist, like me, receives a product they'd like to add to their collection but is flawed, I'd either need to go out and buy a new one or source such replacement items either from MGA themselves - although not likely because they've got a 30 claims period - or AliExpress. For an expensive, 'deluxe' fashion doll, I'm disappointed at how much I will need to fix on this doll and pray to the doll gods that my Kitty K does not suffer from the same upsetting issues.

On the other hand, OMG dolls, being some of the most-have series dolls of the decade, I'm certain if this were to be given to a child, they won't care about these nit-picky flaws and appreciate what they've been given. I would recommend checking these dolls as soon as you purchase them so you're covered by 30 day warranty and have the time to get replacement parts if needed. Don't make my mistake!
