Poopsie Surprise Fantasy Friends - Hunting the mythical mermaids

Note: Click on pics to enlarge!

POOPSIE SURPRISE FANTASY FRIENDS BY MGA! They've been out for a WHOLE year, and I've been squinting at them for as long, trying to decide if they're worth it to buy. I hate slime, I hate messy glitter but the dolls do be kinda cute tho!
I bought one of these months before this 'official' review, but she was neither Shelly Scarlet (above) /Misty Coral - both mermaids - nor one of the others that I wanted to keep but gave me excellent insight to who and what is in the set. I'm a picky little bugger and want absolutely none of the boys nor the rainbow-drizzle dolls. See below my roughed-up checklist.

[checklist with edits][2]

As per usual, my favourites and ones I want the most are the rarest ones to find. I'm cursed! ACK!

Big W is the only place that seems to stock Poopsie Surprise Fantasy Friends anymore, and at $29 AUD for just one, you'd hope hunting down the ones you want would be easier but it's noooot.

I thought there had to be some sort of a cheat because there's no way to tell who's inside based on outer packaging and codes. I found a case positioning hack on youtube, they show the Ultra Rare should be placed in the back middle with a weight of 384.55grams. You'll find out later that this wasn't completely effective for me. The cases were either tampered with, the hack was incorrect or the boxes didn't have the Ultra Rare I wanted in the first place.

[case positioning hack][3]

Each 'blind box' or container no matter who is inside is a pink perfume bottle with a gold cap, a glitter powder spritzer - powder colour varies per character - clear tear strip and clear topper seal. The topper seal can be used to mix the slime in, however, I did not, as I put it back on the container to keep it closed for storage.

All packets inside are wrapped in pale pink so it's impossible to cheat with packet colour.

[identicle containers, inside outer bag][4]

There are 4 internal baggies of varying colours; one large and 3 smaller. The large baggie contains the doll and the little ones have clothes, glitter, parody theme syringe and slime ziplock, checklist, instructions etc. Each doll is 11.5cm(4.5in) will spit (but more like puke) slime and 'poot' or fart glitter.

These little dolls have limited articulation, the head does not turn and they sit awkwardly. I suppose in a way the details, mystery and slime gimmicks were more of a focus in the budget than their ability to move. Both of mine have the same barcode and the same indented batch code of 52419KIE. I marked each with a number; 1 & 2, to tell them apart and put their respective pieces back in.

[batch code][5]

Number 1 weighs 391g, has blue teal glitter spray that comes from spritzer, and gold inner baggies. I felt legs and knew immediately it was not either mermaid. Bugger.

[spray colour, gold inner baggies][6]

It's the Regular/Common Honey Bee, one of the 'Airy Clouds' group, collection number FF-0005. She isn't one I'm hunting for, but she is one I wanted! A transparent plastic mask protects her delicate facial features.

She has cute little yellow pigtails, fringe and bangs. The pigtails have glitter on the ends, and all the hair has an opalescent sheen. Attop her head is a squishy pointed gold crown, and 3 very detailed bees on her fringe, a pigtail and behind her crown, also squishy. Two of the bees have the same mould and the third is unique. Honey is pale in complexion with pointy elf ears and has an opalescent sheen like her hair. Attached to her back is silver glitter-embedded transparent grey bumble bee wings with cell details and lightning bolts, coated in a yellow opalescent sheen. While handling her she was constantly pooting glitter from behind her little white heart butt sticker and it's very fine and messy. Try to keep that sealed as long as possible.

[Front, back][7]

[bees & wings][8]

Her face has blonde eyebrows, yellow eyeshadow & glitter, purple lashes & eyeliner. She's got insert eyes, primarily purple iris' with blue and orange accents, and star and circle reflections. Connected to her insert eyes are real lashes. She has pink blushing and pastel pink lips w/highlight. In her mouth, plugging her head cavity where the slime powder waits, is a heart-shaped gold dummy (pacifier as Americans call it) with heart and star cutouts in the guard, an angry cloud design with embossed rainbow arc ring.

[Honey Bee's face][9]

In the first of the three small bags is her cute rubbery frilly bumblebee outfit! It's base yellow with black accents which are coated in black glitter. Just touching it produced IMMENSE flaking of the glitter. Yucky. I've since aggressively brushed the glitter off with a paintbrush. I could have sealed it with clear coat spray, but I didn't think of it at the time and really wanted to get rid of the problem. I do NOT like glitter when it's on me lol.

[bumblebee outfit, grotesque glitter loss][10]

The second bag contained her soft-drink cup parody Burger King syringe, that reads 'Glitter Queen'. Nice one MGA.

[syringe, company parodied][11]

The last bag contains the checklist, instructions, gold scoop, rainbow shimmer slime additive and ziplock slime storage bag all wrapped up in a little roll. The checklist is double-sided where one side is a little product poster and the other is the actual checklist, shown at the start of the post. The instruction leaflet looks stupid huge, but it's the same instructions in 12 different languages. Every pack comes with a gold scoop that you use to stir the slime. The 'glitter fries' don't seem to be a parody of anything, but I suppose it matches the burger king soft drink cup. The colour of the rainbow shimmer - fine glitter - depends on who you get.

[bundle, reverse side of checklist, instructions, scoop, shimmer, zip lock][12]

I do the slime after unboxing the second one so scroll down for that.

Number 2 weighs 380g, has hot pink glitter spray that comes from the spritzer, and bronze/orange inner baggies. Again I felt legs, so, unfortunately, no mermaids for me this time!

HOWEVER-

I did get Mia Monarch, who is an Ultra Rare! The placement for the case she came from seems to have been correct! Again, she's not the one I'm hunting for, but one I wanted. Mia is from the 'Flora' group and is collection number FF-012.

Mia has flat matte peach-orange hair, fly-away fringe bits and a side pony with orange glitter on the end. The hair looks ever so slightly glitter embedded but is dulled by the matte coating. There's a noticeable smudge in the paint near the front of her hair (second pic, beside the butterfly) - that sucks. Three squishy monarch butterflies sit on her head, all different molds, and have an opalescent yellow coating. She has a sickly jaundice orange-yellow complexion with elf ears and coated in an opalescent sheen. I learned later while doing the slime that the sheen is just an exterior coating and comes off with cleaning chemicals. Mia has gorgeous monarch butterfly wings, made of pale orange transparent plastic, embedded with gold glitter, and coated in pink opalescent shimmer. I had a fairly similar experience with the doll leaking glitter from her butt behind the heart sticker but it wasn't as bad as Honey.

[butterflies and wings][15]

She has eyebrows that match her hair, light orange eyelid crease, orange eyeshadow, light pink eyeliner and drawn lashes. She too has inserted eyes with connected black lashes. Her iris' are a blue-green-hazel gradient with star and circle reflections. There's faint pink blushing to her cheeks and deep peach lips. She's got the same dummy as Honey, as do all dolls in this series. Her left eye was ever so slightly tilted too far up and exposing the bottom of the eye insert but was easy to fix due to her soft squishy head.

Cute monarch butterfly outfit - no glitter thank goodness

[outfit][17]

Checklist, instruction, scoop rainbow shimmer slime additive + rainbow sparkle (special ultra-rare exclusive additive) and Lindt chocolate parody slime storage. Gorgeous peach syringe, brand parody I'm not familiar with.

[bundle, syringe, zip lock, shimmer + rainbow sparkle][18]

Time for my least favourite part - the slime! I wanted to do them at the same time so here we go.

You simply take the syringe, suck up water until its full and force-feed the doll while tilted backwards until the tube is empty. Replace the dummy, hold it firmly against her face and shake for one minute. Then take out the dummy squeeze the life and the slime mixture out of her head into your prefered container. Beforehand, you can tell what colour it will be before adding water by removing the dummy and lightly patting the back of the head or looking directly into the mouth.

[forcefeeding, projectile vomit slime][19]

[looking in Honey's mouth for slime colour][20]

Honey is one of only two characters with slime colour variants. Honey has the choice of green or yellow. Mine has a cloudy green slime with a slight opalescence. I would have prefered yellow, I won't lie, but that's not something I can choose. You leave it to sit for a couple of minutes to activate and then mix it. I left mine a little too long and it became chunky! Added a smidge more water, but no change. I then added the fine green rainbow shimmer glitter, a couple teal spritzes from the spray top of the packaging and some 'poots' of gold glitter from Honey's butt and mixed it all together. Mixing with the scoop and by hand loosened it up a little, and then left it overnight in the ziplock storage baggie turned it into the super gross snot texture I expected it to be. I hate it of course but that is the relationship I have with 99% of slimes. The green, gold and teal do make for a nice colour combo though.

[doing the slime, but messing it up][21]

Mia has only one colour option so she spits a bright magenta pink. I had the same lumpy problem with this slime as I did the green one but it was MUCH worse. Mixing after activating didn't work, adding the orange rainbow shimmer, flakes of rainbow sparkle, pink spritz and orange poot overwhelmed me and the chunks, so I scooped that gunk into its ziplock baggie and never touched it again. Two weeks later, the chunks turned to pink swirls and mixed into the peach fantastically. Oh, no I didn't touch it, I felt up the baggie, squished it a lot. I'm not touching the stuff again if I can help it xD

[doing the slime, and messing it up again :D][22]

There's more volume of the green than there is of peach because of the little extra water I added to green while it was still lumpy. As a result, also, its a lot runnier too, but they're both definitely not congealed enough. I didn't do the slime right! D: When it is done right, and handled by someone who likes it, I'm sure it will be enjoyed far more.

[the slimes after leaving them for a few weeks][23]

Something important to note is that these are extremely messy. Set up an area specifically for the slime making and mixing to avoid getting glitter, goop, and flakes on important things. Also, be wary of the stickers on the doll's butts! They will come loose when handled too much. An oily residue can be felt on the dolls, before and after slime play.

[butt sticker slips][24]

[my colossal glitter messes][25]

As a collector, I do my best to preserve my dolls, and I didn't want these two becoming discoloured by any contents that may reside in their bodies, so I flushed the remaining glitter and slime residue out. This is also incredibly messy, but when it's gone it can no longer make more mess. I left them to air dry first on their back for their body and then face first for their head cavity after flushing. I love these dolls, I don't love the glitter and slime.

[Honey Bee and Mia Monarch][26]

Like me, you may have noticed in one way or another and said "Hm... these dolls look familiar!"

These two look like Sunny and Poppy of Rainbow High, possibly inspiration for the new doll line.

[Honey vs Sunny, Mia vs Poppy][27]

Look! Mia and Poppy have the same monarch butterflies! I see you MGA.

They've taken the design from this earlier line, removed the messy, unnecessary, expensive gimmick, pumped in some budget and showed up with full-size highly articulated fashion dolls. Very effective use of recycled designs in my opinion. In a way, Fantasy Friends are like their little sisters and brothers, or pixie fairy pals perhaps, like the Winx' pixies!
