Code hacks! - Barbie Color Reveal Chelsea MERMAIDS! Complete Set!
Note: Click on pics to enlarge!
One fresh-on-the-shelf untampered case of 6 will have a whole set of 5 and one duplicate. Take out the extra with the identical code and viola, you have all 5. I got the whole set this way!
If you do stumble across a tampered case, or they're not stocked on your store's shelves with the boxes, the following code hacks are here to help.
Code Hack!;
On the lid, you'll be presented with a 4 digit code followed by HF. This is never obstructed and clearly visible. What you'll need to pay attention to is the second and third numbers - this will tell you which Chelsea is inside. Everything else is irrelevant.
2290HF - [29] - light skin, pink pastel hair, mint green and pink tail
2300HF - [30] - darkest skin, pink and green ponytail, hot pink and teal tail
2310HF - [31] - light skin, side shaven mint hair, purple and silver tail
2320HF - [32] - tanned, blonde with pink streak, rainbow tail
2330HF - [33] - tanned, white pigtails, white and blue tail
Packaging;
Everything is contained within a clear plastic tube with a coloured twist lid. Reusable container - nice! Printed wrap with a tear strip covers the clear plastic, and also prevents the lid from being opened. No cheating, no peeking, but you don't need that with the code hack I've given!
After tearing the strip and emptying the contents, I'm presented with three small teal baggies, 1 large baggie, a checklist of sorts and instructions. The three small baggies contain a crown, a clip-on crop top and a comb tail-fluke, all different colours for each doll. The large baggie contains one of the five dolls and is coated in metallic pink paint up to their chest.
The upper torso, arms, and head are exposed, along with their rooted hair (yay! The wigs suck! Thank you Mattel!)I like that all their accessories can be put on them and there's nothing left over, I don't like that they're in separate plastic baggies. Paper would be much better, more environmentally friendly. The instructions and checklist are paper, why arent the baggies? I understand the plastic baggie for the doll herself makes sense, so the paint on her body doesn't get on other stuff, but the accessories could be combined into one baggie, or 3 paper baggies instead.
The container has an embossed water droplet mark near the neck where you fill the WARM water up to, and then dunk your Chelsea doll. You don't need to dunk the hair in, and I would recommend you don't as to not get paint in her hair, but that's up to you really. The dissolving process is very pretty and very satisfying to watch. I understand now why so many people love the colour reveals and why Youtube videos featuring these dolls do so well. Sometime, I might get around to posting the videos I took of the dolls I revealed on my own Youtube I never use, if I do, I'll link it [here]. I'm concerned what sort of damage the glitter microparticles in the wastewater could do to the environment so I'll be keeping my pretty shimmery metallic bottles for as long as I can. Once the paint has all dissolved off the doll, take her out, wipe her off and put her accessories on. Her hair changes colour and her face reveals a design when wiped with, or dunked in ice-cold water.
The dolls;
As always, Barbie's doing their best with diversity in skin colour. There's sort of diversity in eye colour too but 3/5 have a shade of brown eyes while the other two are blue and green. Most of their faces are quite well printed, nicely centred and VERY CLEAR NON PIXELATED! I know that's been a massive problem in the doll community as of late, so to see Barbie picking up their game in that area is excellent.
While the accessories are a little less diverse, and I see kids losing the crowns constantly, my absolute favourite thing is their fluke-comb. It's a functional accessory that's typically lost or discarded with other dolls, but it's needed to complete the look for these ones. I do have earlier releases of mermaid Barbie's and Chelsea's with this feature, and it's one of the reasons I love them. A difference in those though are they bend at the waist and could sit, where the Color Reveals do not. Is the reveal gimmick compensation for the lesser articulation? This would be the only thing I'd have them change in the dolls themselves. I did have some issues with their hair, some needed restyling because they came out of the packet messy, or were shedding quite badly.
To Fin;
I do love them all, but my favourite in this line is #29. I'm all about the pastel pallet stuff and am slowly giving in to it being one of my favourite aesthetics. I'm very keen for the adult barbies and the metallic swirly colour reveal goodness. I'm not super interested in the pets, but I love cats so I might get the purple-green pet if I discover the hack for them without buying them all.
Spelling colour without the U has annoyed me this whole post lol.
