#FailFix Review [Pt.3] - Some variants!

Note: Click on pics to enlarge!

You already know what the boxes look like - they're the same, even for variants - so I'm not showing them again. If you haven't seen them, check them out in [Part 1] and [Part 2].

The same goes for the 'Fail' makeup, hair, etc. The only things that are different between variants are the dress and makeup. This, along with my experience with these specific dolls is what I'll be covering.

[Left: frizzy poof][2]
I did my whole bowl of hot water and dish liquid thing again, which worked to remove the 'fail' but for some reason, this DJ and Kawaii had very poofy frizzy hair, like it was the end of the spool?
Tried brushing it out before drying - didn't budge.
Tried re-setting it with more water and tieing it down - wouldn't co-operate.
Boiled the kettle and drowned them - started working but there was still some frizz.
Did it again - yay, fixed!
These three were the first I experienced moderate hair loss when combing as well.

Who: Loves.Glam

[Loves Glam Day variant][3]

Variant: Day
Fix Makeup: Earthy brown to white gradient, brown rouging with gold spots on cheeks. 2 tone peach pursed lips.
Fix Outfit: LBD with flared sleeves, yellow accents.

[Left: length difference][4]
I tried using the actual brush given for the first time on a chunk of her hair like intended, and it was like there was a crunchy shell around a soft hair centre. It was awful and yucky and I will never do it again. Glam didn't escape the hair madness, but it wasn't frizzy thankfully. When I took her out of the box she started LOSING HAIR. When I washed it out, more came loose, and while combing I discovered a short cut section of hair like Preppi had but much thicker and longer. For the record, this was not the section that I brushed, but a totally different section. I gave her the signature curls though, with the short cut bit left out.

Who: SlayItDJ

[DJ Day variant][4]

Variant: Day
Fix Makeup: blue, pink, brown & yellow eyeshadow, pink to yellow lipstick
Fix Outfit: Back base mid-sleeve tube dress with rainbow pearlescent and pink accents

[Left: plastic issues & factory flaws][5]
Poor DJ, having to boil wash her hair killed her curls and volume, so her mohawk was flat and weird. I recurled and set it by my own means. She's got some unfortunate irreparable body factory flaws too - can't catch a break huh? She has a very visible deep scrape on her forehead far worse than Preppi. It's deep enough that when I run my fingernail across it, it catches. It's about 5mm or 1/4in. She's also got a double-jointed right arm from being bent the wrong way in packaging. It's kind of a flaw AND a feature lmao.

Who: Kawaii.Qtee

[Kawaii Evening variant][6]

Variant: Evening
Fix Makeup: purple & pink eyeshadow with white speckling and silver glitter overcoat. Purple and speckling along the bottom eyelid, icing drips and rosey blushing. Pink star and dot across the nose bridge. Sparkly lavender lipstick with pink highlights
Fix Outfit: long sleeve sweatshirt/jumper style dress w/white and pink zebra stripe tule sleeves. pink cuffs and collars, blue icecream cat print with gold star faux buttons (SOCKS NOT INCLUDED, I ADDED THEM AFTER)

I didn't want my Evening version of Kawaii the same as her 'Day', so I googled Harajuku Fashion, which I'm certain Kawaii's general look is based on, and I was inspired by the curly high pigtails. The look super works for her, but it doesn't incorporate her pompoms. Her legs looked a little bare, so I gave her some spare thigh high socks from a Shibajuku doll I massacred for customisation. MEGA CUTE! ...the socks, not the massacred doll lmao.

When I get my hands on them all, I want my 'Evening' girls to have different hair than 'Day' AND 'Sparkle' (I'll most likely style those two the same as I've done with Glam). My first 'Evening' was DJ and I STILL have no idea what I want to do with her, Kawaii was, in theory, EZ-PZ, the execution was a little difficult but I achieved the look I was aiming for. I'm uncertain what I want to do with Glam's 'Evening' look, but I know I absolutely want to braid Dance's braids. Braid-ception! Dance will for sure be far harder to find than Glam though, as being the sought-after dark-skinned doll, she's disappeared from shelves and stock everywhere. I'll still hold a little light in my heart for her uwu

Holy shit though, can I note; what happened in the factory for all three of these to have hair and body issues? xD I'm underwhelmed by the quality of this group specifically. Whatever stock Kmart and target got SUCKED in comparison to the Big W stock.

Please don't mistake my displeasure for hate towards this doll line, I love them, but I've unfortunately managed to pick up several with issues unintentionally. I'm making sure I'm being very clear and honest about what I personally receive. I pray to the doll gods no more of these come to me with factory flaws.

Anyhoo, beyond the issues, and the 'Evening' hairstyle nonsense, 'Sparkle' variants continue to illude me. Garrett said in the comments of his DJ trio post on Instagram, "day = common, sparkle = rare, and evening = ultra rare," and this baffles me because Evening variants, the 'Ultra Rares' have been easier to track down for me than the 'Sparkles'; the Rares! It could be because I've hacked the system and figured out the differences between Day and Evening and so they're easier to identify for me. The hacks for the 'Day' makes them look super similar to the 'Sparkle', and by pure chance only managed to pick up ONE 'Sparkle', to my 'TWO' Evenings and 'FIVE' Days. I'll be honest, I wasn't intending on collecting the 'Sparkles', but I got Glam's by accident and saw Kawaii and DJ's makeup and I was like... "oh no my bank account." Flashback to Part 1 where I talk about how much it'll cost to buy every single variant. Yikes

Now, time for more hacks!

The 'looking into the side' hack doesn't always work, and can be ineffective; some dressing gowns may be more tightly attached to the backcard or there's no obvious distinction between specific outfits. I'm lookin' at you Glam!
It did in part work for me to find Kawaii's 'Evening' look. While the other two versions (I think, I don't have a freakin' 'Sparkle' Kawaii ;A;) have a print that goes all the way around, is purple up the top and pink down the bottom, 'Evening' has an all-pink back. Look out for that when using this hack.

One of the biggest mega huge giveaways for 'Evening' Kawaii without having to stare deep into the side of the box, is her dress collar. 'Evening' is the only variant that has a collar for her, and sometimes it can become trapped in or above the neck section of the plastic dressing gown. I didn't even notice this on my own until I got home because I was able to determine which she was by looking through the side, and through the front (another hack I'll get to in a sec). Her entire collar was stuck above the gown, so I would've been able to pick her out from the group very easily anyway.

The other 'hack' (hardly a hack honestly) for 'Evening' Kawaii is that the blue ice-cream cone cat print is very dark in comparison to the completely pink base of her dress and can ever so slightly be seen THROUGH the plastic dressing gown. This in conjunction with the side-peering method is how I picked mine out. I had a similar experience with this slight transparency with Glam, and is how I was able to make the prediction that I'd either picked up two 'Day' or one 'Day' and one 'Sparkle'. I thought I'd picked up a 'Day' and 'Evening' but I guess I didn't look hard enough.

If neither of those hacks are working for you, try the eyeshadow colour. Under the eye, on every doll, there is some sort of eyeshadow colouring. On every variant, this is different of course. Fail mask on and mask off images below of my own dolls will show you what to look for on the dolls in stores.

Remember! The focus is on the eye colour UNDER THE EYES. Make sure you open the images in a new tab for a bigger full resolution of it.

[I don't have all variants! This section will be updated as I get them]

Of course, 2Dreami is not included here because there is only one version of her.

Unfortunately, some are far less easy to tell apart or even determine what their makeup is with the mask on, specifically Preppi. If you want to help me out in making a better guide for the eye hack, please contact me on my Instagram and have high-resolution images of your variant with the mask on and mask off, showing as much under-eye makeup as possible.

That's it for now. I hope to find the missing variants I want and then I'll be satisfied and won't need anymore :)
