#FailFix Review [Pt.2] - Preppi, Glam and 2Dreami

Note: Click on pics to enlarge!

Hello there! I'm back with more #FailFix just as I said I would be! I've realised since the last post was written that it's a massive text wall and not at all a joy to read, so I'm going to do my best to summarise things in more of a small paragraph, bullet-point style, and include waaay more pictures.

I picked up the last 3 dolls I needed to 'complete' the set; PreppiPosh (Preppi), Loves.Glam (Glam), and 2Dreami (Dream)!
Preppi and Glam came from Kmart surprisingly, for $25 each, and Dream from Target for $49. I was intending on buying them all from Target but happily welcomed the Kmart stock as they had far more than Target. I visited Big W first to see what their stock was looking like, but there were only Glams, and they were slightly reduced from $29 to $27 for 'promo'. I of course didn't pick them up because I knew where to find them for a few bucks cheaper.
I picked up an additional 3 secret duplicates which I'll be opening and blogging at a later date.

Brief doll profile time!

Fixing!!!

[Left: dollhair soup][8]
Right out of the box, I didn't bother brushing the hair and dunked 'em all straight into a bowl of hot water and dish liquid for 30 mins. In the previous post, I said 1hr but it really depends on the quantity of product used in their hair. I covered why I did this in my previous blog post. Posh and Glam held their curls while still in the water but lost form once rinsed and combed. If you or your child wants to participate in brushing out the Fail, I would still highly recommend washing the hair after you're finished. The end result makes it so very smooth and soft.

Preppi's hairstyle, if you were to go by the guidebook and the box pictures, is actually quite easy to create. You grab the top and frontmost sections of hair, give it a twist to the left, clip in the butterfly and done. I did do that, but if like me you're not satisfied with ANYTHING the first time you do it, I undid it, redid it a little tidier and tied it up. :) So yes, Preppi's hair; very easy to style.

[Left: curling Glam's hair][9]
Glam's hair is easy too, but if a child is working on this doll they may become bored and possibly unsatisfied with the result of using the supplied rollers. I couldn't get the rollers to hold her hair well. The rubbery strap is far too loose and its rotating attachment to the roller prevents it from staying still. What I did get the rollers to hold didn't keep its curl after the specified 5-10 mins. This may be because I washed out the Fail instead of brushing it, so there was no product to keep the shape. I didn't really bother to take photos of this because there's nothing to show lol.

I used 15 of my own homemade mini rollers on Glams WET hair - wet is key to have it set shape - and left her in the sun for about 4 hours to DRY. See why I think the recommended 5-10 minutes isn't nearly enough? As you can see, the curls dried nicely and held their shape. I'll be leaving them free hang for a few days to see if any need re-doing, and I will be properly setting them with hairspray.

One of Dreami's gimmicks is the whole hair colouring thing, but I really feared ruining Dreami's bright white hair. I didn't want to lose all of it, so I looked into a gradient and found a great picture reference of exactly what I had in mind. I needed to make purple though, for a more gradual and subtle blue to pink gradient and I found that mixing 2 parts pink to 1 part blue makes the ideal mid-way colour.  To apply, I didn't use the provided tube-attachment but instead a flat size 12 paintbrush and applied in sections with a glove on the hand I'd be holding the hair with. It looked great, but with how thick I had to apply the dye to make a solid colour it was difficult to brush through it and made the hair sort of crunchy and stiff and there was no chance I'd be able to braid it. I tried setting it with heat and then rinsing off the excess but like the instructions say, washes out with both hot and cold water. It does leave a faint colouring behind, but it's quite pretty. I considered using Sharpie pens of the same pink-purple-blue gradient but decided against it at this point. I'll note the hair dye has a faint creamy smell and a slight metallic colouring.

[2Dreami hair dying and washing out][10]

Her next gimmick is the fishtail braid done with the tool, which I also attempted, and it was kind of a nightmare. It seems like you can only use a section of hair once in the braid because you can't rejoin the piece you've used back with the bulk. This will leave the fishtail braid a lot less full than the pictures show. I didn't take any pictures of that, unfortunately, sorry my bad. I braided it again but freehand this time and yes it was far better than using the tool, but still quite messy and I wasn't happy with it. I honestly didn't feel like doing it again because it's such a time-consuming braid to do on a doll of this size that I went for a different look, also inspired by the original picture reference I used for the colouring. I took sections of hairline rooting to make twists and tied them back, then curled the rest of her hair like Glam, but I did a big brain manoeuvre and made sure I curled all the sections in the same direction. When the curls were dried, I could combine two into one and make a much thicker curl! I then added some of her twist-in gems to finish off the hairstyle. I think she looks gorgeous. I did not use the supplied hair ties for this. I might revisit her later when her curls fall out, to dye her hair with the original colour scheme with the Sharpies like I mentioned earlier.

[finishing her look, and literally the only photo I have of her in the Maxi dress. oops][12]

Thoughts:

[Left: factory damage to hair][13]
Let's start with my own least favourite of the series, PreppiPosh. Preppi's overall style doesn't really satisfy me for her outfit or look. If the dress was pink, or the accessories were blue or white, I think the look would have come together a lot better. Seeing the pictures for her Evening outfit, the accessories will DEFINITELY not match. Beyond her look seeming a little off, my Preppi has a different coloured/mismatched head, torso and limbs. She also has a nose bridge indentation and forehead scrape that is barely visible in the photos I've taken. My Preppi also has a clipped fringe lock! There was a very short section which I cut to the scalp with nail scissors, and a medium section that I've kept, separated and given her a bit of a Superman curl.
While the hair cut and plastic scrape is an isolated issue with my Preppi, the colour mismatch in the body parts certainly isn't, and with her outfit just not satisfying me personally, I won't be searching for her other two variants unless Moose releases fashion packs that match her, and then I MAY consider it.

Everything is totally okay with Glam, aside from the ineffective borderline useless hair rollers. The Sparkle variant - until I see the Evening variant - is my favourite of Glam. The subtle gold accents on her eye makeup are gorgeous.

[Left: underdress for the rainbow maxi][14]
Dreami's set is a great idea but has a lot left to be desired. As an adult collector of toys, I don't usually find myself exploring some functions of dolls if it were to be played with by children but I found myself doing that quite a lot with this one specifically because of everything that didn't work the way it was described. The teeth on the hair dye bottles are quite far apart and the cap holes quite large - even application would be hard. I knew not to use them because I watched a Youtube video of My World using it and it applied in large globs and very unevenly. The dye should definitely have been a liquid of some kind and not gel. The functionality of the fishtail braiding tool was an issue too. Either I've done it wrong or it just doesn't work. I'll happily try it again another time on Dreami or another doll but it's so sad that both of the unique gimmicks for this $50 set don't work as intended. It's a good thing she's a deluxe doll with two outfits and gorgeous makeup. One last note is the stretchy unhemmed undergarment tube dress of Dreami's maxi dress ensemble, that will start to fray on the edges and contributed to the reason why I left her in her Day look.

Like pretty much all toys, these dolls are aimed at children, so for every single one of the dolls in the set, my annoyance is the instructions which kids can heavily rely on to know how to use what they're using correctly. They're incredibly vague, and I can't imagine the amount of difficulty some kids will have trying to imitate the styles they're meant to recreate.

Things I didn't cover in the last blog:
In regards to things I couldn't and didn't cover looking at the first three dolls is all 6 body shapes, 6 different skin complexions, unique head sculpts, and faceplates.

[Skin colour rainbow!][15]
Look at that cool heckin skintone rainbow. There's not that much else to cover there than LOOK. Lmao.
All of their facial scultpts are different too obviously, but it seems like their heads are all the exact same size.
Then there's the different body shapes and height.
Kawaii and Dreami share the same physical traits, the short, slim body type.

Moving on there's the faceplates; they're all differently sculpted and are coded with letters from A to F

A- DanceStylz
B- PreppiPosh
C- Loves.Glam
D- Kawaii.Qtee
E- SlayItDj
F- 2Dreami

I'm yet to figure out what exactly the numbers mean.

I don't think I have anything more to cover at this point, so if there's something I've missed let me know and I'll try to discuss it in the next post.

Final Words~

I love these dolls, they have so much variety and uniqueness. I would definitely recommend them to other people, but I feel like some important aspects of their functionality weren't fully perfected. I expect others to have similar issues to what I have, having seen people before me have them too.

Regardless, I'm still keen to open up my last three (for now heh) 'secret' ones in my next review blog post. Stay tuned for that! There's definitely going to be one last detail that I look into that has helped me and hopefully will help you too.
