Rainbow High! Violet and Poppy Cheer dolls!

Note: Click on pics to enlarge!

Basic Breakdown Info!
Where'd I find em: Violet (no.2) was purchased from Big W, Poppy (no.2) was from Target
How much tho: $29 each

"Um, you're doing this before you look at the wave 1 dolls you have complete minus Avery???" my inner dialogue argues.
Yes inner me, and reader who's confused as to why I'm talking to myself, let me explain;

- I've been looking for storage containers for all the RH because I don't have the space to display them currently but I still wanna play with them. AM BIG CHILD
- I wanna fit two side by side in a container with their accessories without stacking/squishing hair etc. (Storage hair = yucky. RIP literally all my other dolls atm.)
- I haven't found any containers yet
- It's coming down to a crunch; I've got a layby due to come home soon including three Cheer line dolls; Violet no.1, Sunny, and Ruby
- I just put the other 3 Cheer singles (Skyler, Jade, and Poppy no.1) on layby but the final due date is ages away
- PLUS Amaya Cheer who's in another layby due to come home a week after the first one
- PLUS the 6 OG, Bella, and OG Amaya I have here already
- I'm gonna take Violet no.2 or Poppy no.2 with me shopping to find the perfect containers
- Please help haHahahAHAHahAhAhaahahHAa

"Ok, but you have numbers besides Violet and Poppy - you bought two Violets AND Poppys?"

Yes.

Violet no.1 (still on layby) has NO bottom eyelid glitter, and minimal top lid glitter I think
It's more likely this is just poor factory production rather than a variant but I thought it was COOL that she had none rather than the gross mess most of them have.

Violet no.2 here with me today has normal-ish eyes, except for a bottom eyelid lash alignment issue that I'm confident I can fix with a wee little touch-up.
Once I have both I'll show side-by-side pics of the differences.

Poppy has been hard to find without absolute dogshit monarch wing eye makeup that isn't smudged and looks like it was done by a toddler.
When I found two that were about as perfect as I'd seen yet, I put Poppy no.1 on layby and brought Poppy no.2 home.
There's not a lot of difference between the two, so I'm gonna do something fAnCy with the second :)

Let's get on with this review and unboxing then, shall we?

The boxes are mostly the same, aside from the arrangement of the characters along the bottom, and the grouping of colour gradients.

Violet's box is super duper holo shiny and is a faint yellow to purple left-to-right gradient on all sides but the back.

Poppy's is red to yellow.
Side by side they make a whole rainbow!
The back of both boxes are identical, a similar but full rainbow holo with all 6 of the gang.

The boxes have a window where the plastic runs 3/4 across the front, around one side, and 1/4 across the back to give a 200-ish degree angle of the doll.
Looks like a Monster-High-wave-2 type box hm?

They've also got a shmol window on the top of the box with a cute little handle in it.

Both boxes suffered a little bit before I purchased them, and then again before I got home.
The bottom of the back of Vi's box has been dinged pretty badly from the store shelves, and the top left corner of the front split on the way home.
Haha oops.
The tape on the bottom of the box is missing too like it was never put on in the factory.

Poppy's box is almost all ok except for the front along the top and her name tag which I purchased it as, but I have no intention of keeping the packaging so I don't care :)

They have identical batch codes, but the stamp is different.
The barcodes are completely different, for stores or suppliers to identify each doll, but Vi's is a sticker, stuck on over the original.

I opened up Violet first, saved Poppy for last.

Violet came with free extra plastic jibbers that were floating around inside the box. Quality!

I very carefully removed all the tape from the box and opened it from the top.
I was immediately greeted with a very potent vinyl-plastic smell D:
There was a LOT of sticky tape covering the tabs on the back of the box.
Peeled it all off cause why not. Pretty coloured holo-foil cardboard for crafts later? :3
Her removal from the box is fairly easy with a craft blade, and I recommend CAREFULLY parting the hair and nail-clipping the headpins down to the base of the head with nail clippers.

The arm braces can be taken off by removing the hands entirely or by removing the pom pom and twisting the plastic to slide off the hand.

And just like that, the doll is free!

Vi comes with a purple glitter embedded rectangular comb with raised "Rainbow High" detailing. No stand, unfortunately, unlike the original main line.

The first thing I noticed about the pom-poms is that they're held together with coloured zip ties and clear elastic bands.
Yes, the elastic bands are part of the pom poms - I removed them from them and their function is shaping the pom-pom.
That's an interesting choice and kind of lazy.

On to the doll herself, her hair is a ratty mess, but only mildly crunchy, with product in just a fraction of the locks.
She could do with a brush and a visit to the salon.

Her bow is crystal-studded with RH on the left loop and is sewn onto a clear elastic.
The single silver hair clip reads "cheer" and clips on with a simple clasp.

She's got some marks on her face I didn't notice behind the box plastic.
I can clean them off with acetone no worries.

Her makeup, the left eye its the one with the reseeding eyeliner.
It's of course purple-themed, with accents of white, pink and glitter.
Her wing liner is stunning, and the glitter positioning is alright. A little thin though.
Her lipstick is unevenly applied and thinned around the edges :c

Vi's jacket is a thin shiny material with little fake button studs and functional drawstrings!
The hood is far too small to put over her head.
Sparkle is printed on the outer side of both sleeves.
It was tiny plastic jibbered to the bottom of her singlet, and one of the tabs has ripped a hole in it! Noo!
I cut the tabs free but it's beyond saving. I could try some iron-on stuff on the reverse side or something. If that doesn't work I'll probably go to AliExpress or eBay for a replacement.

She looks way more like a cheerleader after taking off the jacket.
Spotted some more paint oopsies while checking out her wonky white nail polish.

Checked out her singlet and skirt properly. The RH label on the skirt is sewn on really crooked, I can fix that though.

Found a smudge on her belly that won't come off, and a scrape on one of her tiddies, oh no.

The shoe mold is very detailed, but the paint job is...eh. I really want to acetone wipe the coloured bits and redo them straight. AGH.
Note the glue on the right heel; they're a separate piece from the shoe :O.
Cute socks tho!

Some of the clothes seams look pretty good, they're holding everything together well, some are kindof wonky, some have a bunch of loose threads. Not terribly concerned, just cut em off.
Make sure they're not important first, give them a tug and if nothing happens, they're ok to cut. If the fabric bunches, flatten it back out and try to knot it first.
The ribbon end under the skirt for example. It was SUPER fiddly.

I usually start looking at a doll by describing height and points of articulation but hidden under Rainbow High doll clothes are some neat BJD secrets.
They're about 27cm tall without heels, and have 13 points of articulation with some double-jointed points, like the knees.
The head spins 360° but does not tilt, the shoulder bends just above horizontal to the body, straight down, and can pivot 360° as well.
The elbows have 90° bend and 360° rotation.
The wrists bend up and down, and also rotate 360°
The hips have sockets that move with the 90° sideways and forwards motion. Just below the hips is another join that allows the entire leg to be completely rotated. Vi's right leg was stuck and wouldn't turn at that join at all, but with a firm grip on the body and twist of the leg, there was a crunch noise and the leg moved freely.
Her knees had a little bit of a knick taken out of them on the inside, and I cut them off. Looks arguably worse now. Regrets.

That's about it for Violet!

---

POPPY TIME! WEE

---

Her box opens pretty much identically to Vi's.

Skipping the body and articulation stuff because they're exactly the same.

Her pom-poms are a mix of white and orange and are made the same dumb way as Violet's are. Orange comb too of course.

Unlike Vi, Poppy's hair is ROCK SOLID. Like, I can bonk the clump of hair on the table and it doesn't budge. There is SO much product in it! She needs a salon day way more than Vi does.

Poppy has a gorgeous 4 loop bow with a butterfly wing print and crystals dotted along the edges. It's sewn to the clear elastic holding her ponytail up.
She also has a gold hairclip that reads 'sparkle', with a simple snap clasp.

Her eye makeup is gorgeous and her shimmering lipstick is almost perfect.
Her printed lashes are mostly well defined and the butterfly wings are fairly straight.
There's an ever so little accent of glitter in the corners of her eyes that could be missed in the wrong light.
The black stripes on her cheeks have a bit of splattering around them but it should clean up with a little bit of acetone.

Poppy has earring holes, but Violet doesn't. Wat.

Her fingernails are painted so very wonkily in two different tones of orange.

Clothes look good, some loose threads here and there. Pulled a seam on the socks cause she got THICC CALFS. That'll need fixing

The shoes are about the same as Violets. Great detailing but yikes paint and glue seepage everywhere.

Poppy has some orange paint from her undies on her right shoulder but other than that her body looks perfect.

You get the idea right? :P I'm at a loss of what else to talk about cause I'm tired, I've been awake for 20 hours, and I LOVE her, but I really am enjoying Poppy, promise!

Everything right with these dolls, so far, in my opinion:
- HAIR. SO MUCH THICK LUSCIOUS HAIR
- Insert eyes, real lashes!
- Large, sturdy, probably hard to break (I'm not going to try lol) GREAT for kids
- Super articulated plus detachable hands that make dressing easier
- decent fashions

Everything I feel neutral about or has room for improvement with these dolls, so far, in my opinion:
- The combs could have been painted where the raised details are
- There's too much excess chunk in the knee and elbow joints that could have been a tighter bend like in made2move Barbies
- The paintwork on the shoes could definitely be better
- NO STANDS IN THE CHEER LINE. WHY.

Everything wrong with these dolls, so far, in my opinion:
- The lack of quality control; Poor face detail application among other things
- The way the pom-poms are made; I KNOW MGA have done pom-poms before in Bratz and they did NOT look like this

Please keep in mind I was quite patient, searched through all the shelf stock of multiple stores, and hand-picked these two (and all my others tbh). Australia gets REALLY shitty, flawed stock of MGA merchandise, it's like we get the gross seconds. Chances are if you just grab one willy-nilly off the shelf without really looking at it you might end up with some monstrosity like these:

These were just a few that I came across. If it took pics of all the flaws, it would've been all of them except the ones I bought!

Please, if you're a customiser with the intent to try some Rainbow High, fix these cursed women. Remove them from circulation so that only PERFECTION remains uwu.

I am looking forward to opening the originals once I have some storage for them, and I'm hoping their quality - being the first in the lines - is better than these 'budget' release versions.
